I think people enjoy reading book reviews. I enjoy writing them. I enjoy reading thoughts that people have on books before I purchase them. I do not buy used books unless they are out of print. I do not like the idea of touching someone’s poop-stained books while I’m cozy in my bed. Nobody hurts me in my bed. My bed is for being clean and dreaming about my high school having a large and complicated layout, having the parking lot of my elementary school but the outside appearance of my middle school, etc. I do not have sex. One time I brought a girl up to my room and cried in front of her. The next morning my mom said she was up all night worrying about “whether or not she would say that I raped her.” I cannot justify buying a hundred used books in bulk for twenty dollars because, I don’t have a place to put them, and I don’t read very fast. I do not like public libraries. If I explained why then I would be a hypocrite.

These books are, as far as I can remember, in the chronological order of which I’ve read them, from oldest to newest.

No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai

I don’t remember much from this book so I’m not firing on all cylinders here. I remember it as being flaccid. The narrative not being a vessel that’s interesting enough to carry the author’s aphorisms. I would rather just read the author’s aphorisms. The common consensus that I made up in my head is that one should just read The Book of Disquiet instead. I agree.

On The Marble Cliffs by Ernst Jünger

Hazy. Sort of like reading marble. Only slightly less opaque. Very much a “shoe that fits various feet.” Cool worldbuilding. It would probably be worth learning the bastard Neanderthal language of German if only to read Jünger’s bibliography unmolested. Interesting fellow. I want to read Storm of Steel.

Stoner by John Williams

I think it was almost immediately after finishing this book that I suddenly saw it appear everywhere, I saw people posting about how sick they were of seeing it, millions of people, for no reason, all in a matter of what felt like seconds. I think perhaps that this book and everything surrounding it has a strange time-dilation effect. This book is how I imagine salvia or datura trips feel when they’re described to me. It genuinely felt to me as though I’d lived the entire life of a man, within the span of a few weeks or however long it took me to read this book. It didn’t take me a lifetime, I don’t think. I don’t know. This is not just a “life sucks and then you die” style book. It is a masterpiece. You should read this book if you haven’t, but maybe everyone’s read it already. Maybe I’m dead.

Ways of Seeing by John Berger

Interesting, well worth reading if you “care” about “art” at all. I don’t know why you would lol. I like when books have pictures. Here are some quotes, removed from context so that they’re useless, that I found on my camera roll.

All Desire is a Desire for Being by René Girard

René Girard has quickly become my favourite “philosopher.” There are essays in this book that touch on work that I haven’t read, and so I skipped those ones. I’ll come back to them. The one on Nietzsche’s “God is dead” thing is good. There has never been a more relevant time to learn about mimetic theory. This book is worth buying simply for the last few pages, which contain a few hundred maxims that are each very intriguing. I think they would be good if they were posted as Substack notes and paired with a picture of a bunny rabbit from Pinterest.

Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

It’s well put together. Half of the book is him adding little stipulations, covering his tracks, saying “well, if you don’t agree with this, that’s okay, and, well, just to clarify, if you don’t like this idea, then don’t read this chapter, and, well…” I enjoyed it. Read it if you’re interested in theology, or, don’t, or if you’re…

100 Selected Poems by e.e. cummings

This has one of the best poems ever written in it so you should probably read it.

Japanese Death Poems by Yoel Hoffmann and a bunch of Asian people who died

I picked this book up randomly, I think because it was on sale, and it turned out to be one of the most interesting things I’ve ever read. I’m about, say, one quarter through. Very lengthy introduction dense with gold and gems. I am an ignorant gaijin and I didn’t even know “death poems” were a thing.

By Jeff Martin. Some seriously captivating stuff on his website. I like when patchwork is used outside of textiles. Ceramics and wood are so naturally compatible, texture / colour-wise. I wish I saw them used in tandem more often. Really stylish asymmetrical off-kilter tiling giving it an almost primitive feel, like it’s made with old restored Mesopotamian roofing tiles. It’s something you’d see in some fictional 3rd millennium B.C. bronze age culture, recovered from an archaeological dig in a Mediterranean proto-city. I like the worldbuilding.

I have a memory of reading about this chair from some Taschen book but I can’t find it. If you know, let me know. Maybe I was molested whilst reading 1000 Chairs and my brain created a false memory. Inspired by Brazilian fishing vessels. So sick. I’d even settle for a reproduction. It’s very comely. I don’t like the patina on the leather, I don’t care that “its creases, stitching, and texture have aged naturally over six decades, in a way no reproduction can ever capture.” It would look better restored.

Nemo Escargot Floor Lamp in Brass by Le Corbusier

Thought this was some sort of wood for a minute but it’s cast brass. Very gentle. Anodized aluminum reflector. Designed by Le Corbusier for the Unité d’Habitation in Marseille.2 Sort of an ugly building to be honest. Probably cooler when it was first built. This lamp’s too kind for such a mean building.

Carlo Bugatti has never made a single ugly object. So fun. Each of the little embossed corners are unique, it’s all wonky, there’s this alternating triangular inlay pattern around the rim of the mirror. I like walnut. Pretty parchment. I’d love to write a book on the life of Carlo Bugatti and his work. If anyone knows any good in-depth sources please let me know. I can only ever find tidbits.

C. You cannot separate the ART from the ARTist.
- it doesn't work! and i don't think it's as big of a deal as people make it out to be. you cannot deny that it adds to a painting when you learn that Hitler painted it. i don't really know what it adds, but it does add something. context for me is basically seasoning for art. too much and it tastes like shit. i don't want every facet of an artists life splayed out like a corpse in front of me. i also think it's lame to scroll past some anonymous artwork on instagram. my point is that if there's information available to you about an artist that you're ignoring while you're looking at their artwork, you're denying yourself a certain experience, maybe a good experience.

D.  The consequences of the ART must always be considered.
- there's a lot of performance art that involves animal abuse for some reason. Marco Evaristti, with the goldfish in the blenders and the piglets starving to death, as an example. you cannot disregard the suffering of the animals and view the piece only as "performance art." the suffering is core to the artwork, and that should affect the way you feel about it. art is a bad excuse. morality is a constraint! if you shoot somebody in the head and call it theatre, sure, it's theatre, but it's also shooting somebody in the head. that's bad art i think! it doesn't just apply to moral consequences either. everything. keep it in mind!

i can’t think of anything else rn lol but i think i’ve covered the stuff i care about. short post but whatever. this isn’t really how i critique art1 but how i think about critiquing art. i would call it “meta-critiquing” if i was some sort of queer homo, but i shan’t! 再见!
